Here’s some facts about pets with visual impairments

They’re incredibly aware of their surroundings due to their heightened sense of smell, sound and touch – making them highly capable to be working dogs and they are highly trainable too! They make for great guard dogs too because they pick up on sounds very easily.

These pets have a tendency to be great companion dogs especially with children and as therapy dogs – like Smiley the blind Golden Retriever who has helped a number of people and has thousands of social media fans.

They are just as capable as any other animals that have perfect vision. Blind animals are able to complete routine tasks and get along well with other pets as well as walk well on a leash. Blind dogs map out their environment very quickly and so you won’t often see them bump in to furniture around the house, they are actually very independent and can even easily climb stairs without assistance.

Blind or not, all pet’s deserve the same love and affection from us humans. These animals have contributed to society in so many ways and remind us to be humble. If you or someone you know are considering adopting a pet, perhaps the above facts would be encouragement to consider taking home a blind pet or support a social cause that cares for blind animals.
